We all love a little friendly competition.
And we're certainly all guilty of the comparison game these days.
But I'm going to throw a spanner into the works.
The only person you should compete against is yourself.
Progress is made by taking a step further from where you were the week or month before. This means that you need to be able to track your progress, not measure your worth against what someone else is doing. If you have someone who is training very similarly to you, you may find some friendly competition is useful. Just make sure not to get distracted by people who are training very differently to you on social media.
Stay in your own lane and monitor your own progress.
It can be truly exhausting to keep up with what everyone else is doing and always looking for external indications of where you 'should' be. More importantly, what we think they are doing is often not the reality of what they are doing. Please be aware that many people on social media are steroid-users (yes, women too!), edit their photos and videos to change their bodies, or change their bodies surgically, etc.
Instead of watching what other people are doing, focus in on yourself. Get to know your own strengths and weaknesses super well.
When you do this, you'll know when you can push yourself and when you need to pull back.
This will help to avoid injury and burnout, and promote longevity in training.
As always, consistency is the most important thing in getting results!
Ultimately, competing against yourself can be very powerful. Instead of fixating on the accomplishments of others, honing in on your own journey for your own sake might just be exactly what is needed.
I hope you found this valuable!
